Brake cables and shift cables are not the same; they are actually different thicknesses. Many people replace their cables with the wrong ones or do not install the ferrules and hardware necessary to operate properly. It is also important to replace both the cable and housing at the same time. Running a new cable through a dirty, gummed up housing does not improve shift or braking quality.
