There are a wide variety of shifter types for road, mountain, and recreational bikes. Mountain bikes tend to have paddle or gripshift shifters, whereas road bikes will utilize a shift/brake combo shifter. Bar-end shifters are for time trial or triathlon bikes that utilize aerobars.
