There is a real attraction to a BMX bike for your kid, for starters they do not have gears and are built to be bomb proof which means a lot less trips to the bicycle repair shop. The sport of BMX has all sorts of different categories and events from freestyle to off road but the bikes are relatively the same or with some modifications. Unless you live in a very hilly area your child will be just fine with a single speed BMX bike, and you may swap out a chainring at little cost. Note that there are many very inexpensive BMX looking bikes on the market that do not have the quality of construction and materials to actually function as a BMX bike. A quality bike will last many, many years even when highly used and abused.
