Skewers and Thru Axles

Bicycle quick release skewers have been around for decades and were standard equipment on most bikes.  The thru axle is in many ways a superior replacement; stiffer, safer, and better performing with disc brakes.  Your bike frame must be compatible to use a thru axle and most older bikes are not compatible.  Thru axles come in various widths and thread pitches that again must match your frame.
